LGS (Landesgartenschau) ULM 2030 – the key component of the concept is the transformation of a monofunctional piece of infrastructure into an urban environment. The Landesgartenschau 2030 is supposed to further integrate the Bundesfestung (fortress of Ulm) into the cityscape, reduce the traffic impacts along the B10 corridor and use the regained open spaces for pedestrian and bicycle connections as well as green space.

In its current condition, the highway B10 is a perfect example of the car-centric city of the 1960s and 1970s. During that time period, the individual auto mobility stood for progress, future, and a fast-growing economy. In most instances, social, urban, and open space linkages had to take a subordinate role to this principle. This resulted in a vast, monofunctional traffic infrastructure.

As an allegory for this anachronistic premise – establishing a most direct connection between highway A7 and A8 – the highway B10 does not consider its urban surroundings. The highest and most characteristic elevation of the city – the Ulm Minster´s tower – is flying by. One does not experience the city that exists on both sides of the street.


Sequenzen Nowadays, the principle of the car-centric city stands for an erroneous development. In many locations, existing traffic infrastructure from that era suffocates the urban fabric like a corset, disrupts essential linkages, and diminishes new processes and developments.
Besides regaining the legibility of the linear glacis and its incorporation into a lively open space network, one of the main tasks of Ulm´s Landesgartenschau will be regaining the east-west connections. The streetscape of highway B10 is rather a succession of different sequences with changing, characteristic qualities than a continuous, linear axis. For the idea of the Landesgartenschau to succeed, the street needs to be transformed from a monofunctional piece of infrastructure into an urban living environment.


Transformation The overall concept is based on the open space fragments of Ulm´s former fortress that are being put together like puzzle pieces and merged into one visible open space network. By reducing and transforming traffic infrastructure as well as establishing continuous, attractive pedestrian and bike connections, linking open space and areas for alternative urban design developments are being created. The three main areas of traffic interventions are Blauberger Tor, Mittelbastion, and Ehringer Tor.

Interpretation and spatial layering To interpret the spatial conditions, the concept defines six thematic layers that are also analysis and conceptual layers:


Landscape with topography, vegetation, streams, and aquatic system


Open space with green areas, open space uses, public spaces, and trees


Fortress as historic space with visible and lost relicts and structures that define the city scape


Urban space with built streetwalls, building fabric and ground floor uses


Transition space with paths, bike connections, streets, mobility options


Exhibition space with characteristic locations, adventure spaces, and attractions during LGS 2030

Landesgartenschau 2030 as a process For the citizens of Ulm, the Landesgartenschau starts before doors will open in 2030. The transformation of the street infrastructure plays a key role. It needs to be discussed and negotiated thoroughly with the public. Thus, different formats will be needed, e.g. participation, experiments, visionary interventions, construction sites, show rooms, etc. Overall themes conflict with historic fragments (fortress) and a new understanding of integrative planning which connects public infrastructure and social qualities with the seemingly contradictory demands of traffic and accessibility, living and business, open space qualities, and climate protection.
This effort will require great courage from its participants to question existing and familiar conditions. However, Ulm has the chance to heal the wounds of its past traffic planning. New spaces for living and development could be gained and an example of future planning culture could be set beyond the city´s boundaries.
