Project Description

An international convention center is to be built in Freising, which aspires to become the new landmark of European event architecture. In the multi-stage competition, asp Architekten’s design was awarded second prize.

A hybrid multifunctional hall based on the “low tech” principle: asp’s design for the multifunctional MUCcc congress center next to Munich Airport is characterized by a climate-friendly and future-oriented construction method. The central architectural idea: combining all functions (event hall, hotel and parking garage) in a single structure and interacting with its context. The new building sits on a large, green landscape tableau that rises above Munich’s northern gravel plain. It confidently defines the western gateway to the airport and visually spans the emerging LAB science campus to the airport terminals.

It enters into a dialog with its surroundings as a solitaire visible from afar via its semi-transparent shell that shimmers mysteriously in the evening hours: a membrane made of a semi-transparent, horizontally curved Polytetrafluoroethylene (PFTE) roof and façade skin makes the building’s inner structure readable from the outside. The use of the building as a music arena can be perceived vaguely from the outside, while at the same time a unobstructed view is possible all around from the inside. At night, the artificial light from the interior supports the building in its impressive perception from afar.

With a gross floor area of 110,000 square meters, the design allows the building to experience sustainability and translates it in a contemporary way. The arena features an innovative supporting structure made largely out of wood. The conventional consruction materials of steel and concrete are reduced to a minimum. For example, the roof girders, floor slabs and the spectator stands are planned to be made of prefabricated wooden segments. This lightweight construction method reduces the use of reinforced concrete over a large area and consistently implements the ecological aspiration to reduce gray energy.

As a multifunctional building, the customized circular bowl with a capacity of up to 22,000 spectators integrates flexible uses and allows for events with an end stage, center stage, cross stage, a theater configuration, e-sports events, sporting events, public viewing, conventions and conferences. A high degree of flexibility allows the MUCcc Arena to be adaptable to future needs. The hotel is integrated into the structure of the bowl and offers as a backstage hotel short travel times to all other amenities. The connection to the congress center is ideal. The building with its iconic appearance becomes a landmark and an attraction that increases identification in the midst of a sprawling and inhospitable environment.
