Project Description

1st prize for restricted procedure in cooperation with Schlaich Bergermann und Partner – sbp GmbH

The Mercedes-Benz Arena is more than just a stadium – a modern sports hall and a fencing centre have been integrated below the spectator terraces. . Through the reconstruction of an athletics arena to a full-fledged football stadium, the spectator capacity has been increased to 60,500 audience seats for Bundesliga matches (seating and standing areas) and to 55,000 seats for international matches. At several construction stages, the Untertuerkheim and the Cannstatt Curves and the existing athletic tracks were broken down and the playing field was lowered by 1.30 m. The lower tiers were augmented by new rows in the direction of the playing field in order to bring the grandstand and the opposite stand closer to the playing field. To improve the spectator infrastructure in the curves, the Untertuerkheim und Cannstatt Curves were rebuilt and expanded with an additional second tier.

Sport Hall with a View A sport hall for 2000 spectators was integrated in the Untertuerkheim Curve – a concept that has until now been singular in Europe. Large openings for windows between the sport hall and the stadium create significant visual references and grant visitors interesting views of the interior and exterior.

Variability of use The economic operation of a modern football stadium requires a greater variety of possible uses than the full occupancy in league matches every two weeks. Companies and organisers have already discovered the attraction of the stadium as a prestigious event location. The three business areas of the stadium can be flexibly furnished and used for events of all kinds. Equipped with the most modern conference and event technology, all possibilities are available here, from a shareholders’ meeting on the grandstands with a podium on the playing field to trade fairs and product presentations to private celebrations on a small scale.
