First prize in the competition “Rosenstein – new ideas for a city district in Stuttgart” together with Koeber Landschaftsarchitektur, ee Concept/ Darmstadt, Philipp Bouteiller/ Berlin, Koehler & Leutwein/ Karlsruhe

The interplay of open spaces, connection routes and references to urban spaces, as well as locational qualities, uses and typologies creates a coherent district with the Gleisbogenpark (Curved Track park) as a common centre with a succession of networked open spaces on a neighbourhood level from the Stuttgart north train station district and its new quarters.

Urban Park as the Urban Backbone The curved track as an urban park will be the new urban backbone for the expanding inner city. As a link, it connects the city’s north and east districts whilst, at the same time serving as the axis for urban development. The new „parking arc“ takes all the functions of a modern green infrastructure and combines the exisitng and the new quarters into a common whole. As a densely programmed open space, it takes on important recreational, cultural, sport and social functions as an urban complement to the landscaped recreational area of the Rosenstein Park and continues the urban pedestrian and cycle path network towards Neckar.
In addition it integrates elements, in order to improve the ecological and urban climatic conditions as well as themes of urban agriculture.

Integration of the surrounding structures The existing block structures of the landmarked- protected railway district will be further developed as a starting point for a connecting “brace” for the new district. Car- free, dense and green areas with their own independent identities are created whilst taking into account the existing connections, structures and visual axes.

Neighborhoods as focal points A neighborhood hub with a hybrid hub that brings together social infrastructure, new mobility, energy and material flows in a sustainable way is the heart of every neighborhood. At the core, the hub is designed as a neighborhood garage and can be adapted and re-used according to changes in mobility behavior. The park’s edge, as the most attractive residential area in the new district, is intended as a field of experimentation for community and social coexistence. Depending on the location, the buildings are differentiated in terms of ground floor use and floor plan typologies. In the outskirts of the new park, the arch of the former railway body is worked out as a succinct form, high points are set as urban planning accents and clear space edges are formed. The wagon halls provide the impulse generator for the new creative quarter with a modular, flexible and experimental building structure. In the urban mixed use of Europa quarter (Europe quarter) a live/work initiative is incorporated. Cultural building blocks and social infrastructure complement the commercial proposals. The boulevard links the district with the existing Europaviertel.

Energy concept The new Rosenstein district receives a sustainable and future-oriented energy concept. The basis of the energy supply is a smart grid that connects and optimizes all consumers, producers and storage units in the district. With electricity as the only source of energy, energy flows can be organized waste-free and highly flexible throughout the district. Heat generation per cluster is decentralized via heat pump systems in the respective media centre. The required electricity is generated by extensive activation of the newly developed surfaces in the quarter itself. Roof and façade surfaces generate more energy with building-integrated photovoltaic systems over the course of the year than is consumed overall. Overall, this creates a very economical system that ensures a CO2-neutral energy concept and long-term security of supply.

Mobility Multimodality generates optimal networking of the different modes of transport and a low-car city structure. The traffic is intercepted at the edge of the quarters and guided towards district- specific garages. A comprehensive range of electric car sharing vehicles should reduce the number of cars and thus the need for car parking spaces. Between the neighborhoods residential roads are provided; the neighborhoods themselves are car-free without private parking spaces as a shared space reduces traffic build up. The quarters are interlinked by a continuous network of cycle paths. In particular, the newly designed cycle paths network the area along the northern railway line or parallel to the avenue of sycamore trees in Rosenstein Park.
