Project Description

1st Prize German Embassy Sofia [2014] | Completion 2020

With elegant restraint to the outside world and communicative openness to the inside, the new building represents the Federal Republic of Germany in Sofia. The Embassy’s office building is to be regarded as a stand-alone building in a park. As a clear cube, the building does not have any projections or recesses. Only the entrance is marked by an incision that also forms the canopy in a natural way.

Narrative elementsThe architectural clarity of the building develops from a basic grid that is consistently followed from the supporting structure through the division of the fa├žade to the extension. The strict geometry of the fa├žade is interrupted to the north, west and south by large special components. The building concept of the interior is transferred into a narrative element of the fa├žade, the inner structure of the building becomes noticeable: As an extension of the inner development zone, each floor has a lounge area with balcony and large window front, which – similar to a passe-partout – allows framed views of the city and on the top floor of the mighty Vitosha Mountains on the horizon. The result are open room sequences that create places of communication and exchange.
